Good to know
Snowshoes are the easiest way to explore deep snow around a cabin, in the forest or on low hills. Walk with your normal stride, a little wider than usual, and use poles for balance if you have them. Wear waterproof winter boots and gaiters if you have them.
Stay safe
Keep to gentle terrain unless you have avalanche training. Before any trip into the mountains, check the avalanche forecast on varsom.no and the weather, and tell someone where you are going. Daylight is short in midwinter, so start early and bring a headlamp.
Where you pick up
The gear is kept at Seljelvnes in Balsfjord, on the E8 about 70 km (roughly 1 h 15 min by car) south of Tromsø city centre. You can also choose the free meeting point at the Coop Extra Nordkjosbotn parking lot, about 10 minutes further on where the E8 meets the E6 – easy to find and open to the public. You get the exact address, pickup time and the owner's phone number as soon as you book. Pickup is easiest if you have a car or are driving on towards Lyngen or Senja.
