Where to ski
On Tromsøya, lit and groomed trails (lysløyper) run across the island, so you can ski after work or in the dark polar-night afternoons. In Balsfjord and Nordkjosbotn you will often find quieter trails and forest roads with good snow. Ask the owner at pickup – locals know where the tracks were set this week.
Tips for first-timers
Dress in layers – you warm up fast once you move. Bring a small backpack with a dry layer, water and something to eat. Check the listing for ski length and which height it fits, and tell the owner your shoe size if boots are included.
Where you pick up
The gear is kept at Seljelvnes in Balsfjord, on the E8 about 70 km (roughly 1 h 15 min by car) south of Tromsø city centre. You can also choose the free meeting point at the Coop Extra Nordkjosbotn parking lot, about 10 minutes further on where the E8 meets the E6 – easy to find and open to the public. You get the exact address, pickup time and the owner's phone number as soon as you book. Pickup is easiest if you have a car or are driving on towards Lyngen or Senja.
